چکیده

The ability to communicate is an important feature of multicellularity (Hervé et al., 2005). The coordinated integration of extracellular, intracellular, and intercellular mechanisms promotes the maintenance of homeostasis in higher organisms. Direct intercellular communication is mainly mediated by gap junction channels, which are formed by members of the connexin protein family in vertebrates. Connexins (Cx) are look like plaques that at the cell plasma membrane surface regulate electrical signals and the passage of ions, small biological molecules ( 1000 Da), including sugar, nucleotides, amino acids, second messengers such as Ca2+, cyclic AMP and inositol triphosphate, as well as metabolic precursors, between neighboring cells. Gap junction intercellular communication (GJIC) are critically important in many biological activities, including morphogenesis, cell differentiation, growth

Possible Mechanisms of Mercury Toxicity and Cancer Promotion: Involvement of Gap Junction Intercellular Communications and Inflammatory Cytokines

A number of observations indicate that heavy metals are able to alter cellular metabolic pathways through induction of a prooxidative state. Nevertheless, the outcome of heavy metal-mediated effects in the development of human diseases is debated and needs further insights. Cancer is a well-established DNA mutation-linked disease; however, epigenetic events are perhaps more important and harmfu...

Modulated gap junctional intercellular communication as a biomarker of PAH epigenetic toxicity: structure-function relationship.

Cancer is a multistage multimechanism process involving gene and/or chromosomal mutations (genotoxic events), altered gene expression at the transcriptional, translational, and post-translational levels (epigenetic events), and altered cell survival (proliferation and apoptosis or necrosis), resulting in an imbalance of the organism's homeostasis. Maintenance of the organism's homeostasis depen...

Intracerebroventricular Injection of Lipopolysaccharide Increases Gene Expression of Connexin32 Gap Junction in Rat Hippocampus

Introduction: Gap junctions are intercellular membrane channels that provide direct cytoplasmic continuity between adjacent cells. This communication can be affected by changes in expression of gap junctional subunits called Connexins (Cx). Changes in the expression and function of connexins are associated with number of brain neurodegenerative diseases. Neuroinflammation is a hallmark of vario...

Gap junctions of the hippocampal CA1 area are crucial for memory consolidation

Introduction: Gap junctions are specialized cell–cell contacts between eukaryotic cells through which they communicate. This type of communication has the potential to modulate memory process. We evaluated the effects of the gating of the hippocampal CA1 area gap junction channels on memory consolidation, using passive avoidance task. Materials and Methods: 72 adult male Wistar rats were distri...

Gap junction-mediated intercellular communication in ischemic preconditioning.

Gap junction-mediated communication can modulate cell death in different tissues. In myocardium, gap junction communication is altered during ischemia, which contributes to the development of arrhythmias, but still allows synchronization of the onset of rigor contracture in the progression of injury. During reperfusion, gap junction communication allows cell-to-cell spread of hypercontracture a...
